City looks at hiring three cops

The DeKalb City Council will consider increasing DeKalb’s police force by three officers at the meeting Monday.

To offset the expense of hiring three full-time officers, the Department of Justice has awarded DeKalb a grant of an estimated $225,000 to be distributed over the course of three years.

DeKalb could potentially save $300,000, City Manager Mark Biernacki said. About $8.9 million in general obligations bonds are eligible for refund, and the council will decide how to take advantage of this opportunity.

The council will also consider the installation of fiber-optic cables to its municipal buildings. To save money, the project would be done when NIU has its system installed.

Residents of the Garden of Rivermist subdivision could have new neighbors in the coming months. The council will vote on whether or not to allow a final lot for the subdivision to be constructed.

The council will consider the addition of two lights on the east side of Garden Road, south of Hillcrest Drive and north of Barsema Hall.

The DeKalb City Council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St.
