Malta grade school vandalized overnight

Vandals broke into a local grade school early Wednesday morning, spray painting the building and making away with school equipment.

A school employee alerted the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Police of the break-in at Malta Elementary, 507 N. Third St. in Malta.

Sheriff’s police said suspects stole items including hand-held two-way radios, cameras, calculators and microphone equipment.

The cafeteria walls and floors were vandalized with spray paint.

The school has not had any trouble with vandalism in the past, principal Connie Rohlman said.

The break-in was discovered before students arrived at school and the amount of damage is still being determined, Rohlman said.

Rohlman said she would not comment on what was spray painted on account of the current investigation. Sheriff’s police have named no suspects in the incident.
