Sycamore will host block party Saturday
September 16, 2004
This weekend, community members can gather for pie and games at the Sycamore Block Party.
Discover Sycamore and The National Bank & Trust Company are partnering to host the Fourth Annual Discover Sycamore Block Party.
The block party is scheduled for 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday on State and Somonauk streets.
Discover Sycamore is an organization that helps to promote downtown Sycamore and local businesses.
Beth Helton, Discover Sycamore coordinator, said it is a great family event, especially for kids.
“We’ll have many games for the kids, food from Discover Sycamore members and a pie-eating contest,” Helton said.
From now until the event, residents can earn “blocks” for every $5 spent, with a $10 limit per purchase, at participating businesses.
“Blocks” are certificates redeemable at The National Bank & Trust Co., 1425 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore, for registration in prize giveaways.
Rose Treml, Sycamore Chamber of Commerce executive director, said that 14 businesses are participating.
“The grand prize is a $500 certificate of deposit from the bank, and each business will have their own prize giveaways,” Helton said.
BJ Decorating is giving away Chicago Bears, Cubs and White Sox flags.
A kid’s parade beginning at Sycamore State Street Theatre, 420 W. State St., starts the event at 3 p.m. Kids can march east on State Street to Somonauk Street.
Entertainment will include a musical performance by Hi-Fidelity, a classic- rock band from Chicago’s western suburbs. The band will start at 6:30 p.m. on the main stage located at the corner of Elm and Somonauk streets.
Local restaurants, including PJ’s Courthouse Tavern & Grille, 202 W. State St.; Taxco Restaurant, 223 W. State St.; Culver’s Frozen Custard, 1200 DeKalb Ave. and Ski’s All American Pub, 1001 W. State St., will supply food, Helton said.
“Our objective is to promote Sycamore by marketing, shopping and promoting tourism,” Helton said.
