Huskies set new mark

Trailing Miami-Ohio by one in Friday’s matchup, the NIU women’s soccer team’s unbeaten streak was nearing an end.
That was until NIU freshman midfielder Beth Matus scored a goal with one second remaining to send the game into overtime, where it ended in a 1-1 tie. The tie ended a five-game losing streak to Miami-Ohio.
“We weren’t going to quit, literally, until the last second,” Matus said.
Freshman forward Lindy Slinger struck first for Miami-Ohio in the second half, putting late pressure on the Huskies, forcing a change of game plan.
“We made adjustments,” Horvat said. “We were able to come back, and that shows that we have heart and character.”
Friday’s tie set the stage for a record-breaking matchup with Ball State on Sunday.
NIU was once again able to escape with a 1-1 tie, bringing its record to 4-0-3 to surpass the 1998 Huskies for longest unbeaten streak in team history.
“It’s great,” said NIU coach Frank Horvat of the record. “I’m happy for my players, but we want more.”
Matus picked up where she left off Friday, scoring her third goal of the season nine minutes into the game to give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Huskies saw senior forward Kate Nadalin score an unassisted goal directly off a corner kick to tie the match.
“Give Ball State a lot of credit; they caused us a lot of problems,” Horvat said. “It wasn’t one of our best matches, but we still got a point, and that is important.”
Ball State out-shot NIU 25-11 with 13 shots on goal compared to the Huskies’ five.
NIU plays next Friday at host Western Michigan in a battle for the top spot in the MAC West.
