Women’s soccer still undefeated

No losses. That is what the NIU women’s soccer team has accomplished this year.

The only time a Huskies team has gone more than five games in a row without a loss was in 1998 when they won six in a row.

NIU (4-0-1, 1-0-1 MAC) tied Ohio 1-1 on Friday night and beat Marshall 1-0 on Sunday.

On Friday, Huskies senior defenseman Jamie Figura netted her first goal of the season for the Huskies. Figura then scored her second goal of the season against Marshall on Sunday.

“Jamie came out of her slump this weekend,” NIU coach Frank Horvat said.

Figura collected four points this weekend, scoring both of NIU’s goals.

“We’re happy with 1-0-1 on a road trip like this,” Horvat said. “Two wins would have been outstanding, but we’re happy with one win and a tie.”

Junior goalkeeper Carrie Dvorak, the women’s soccer MAC Co-Player of the Week, ended her shut-out streak on Friday. Dvorak had not let a goal pass by her since the season opener on Aug. 27.

“Carrie [Dvorak] played extremely well for us,” said Horvat.

Ohio’s only goal came from freshman midfielder Danielle Young, who scored her first goal of her college career.

Horvat was pleased with the way his team played in Saturday’s win over Marshall.

“We were more dominant in this game, but we gave up some opportunities,” Horvat said. “All in all, it was the best 90 minutes we’ve played all year. Things really looked good and came together. I can’t ask for much more than that.”

Heading into the season, Ohio was ranked No. 2 in the MAC while Marshall was not ranked.
