Stimpy‘ to address NIU

By Peter Schuh

The fat cat half of Ren and Stimpy is coming to town.

Actually, not all of Stimpy will be arriving at NIU—only his voice.

Billy West, the voice of Stimpy the cat in Nickelodeon’s hit cartoon “The Ren and Stimpy Show,” will be speaking at 8 p.m. tonight in Cole Hall, room 101.

West, whose voice also belongs to such well-known characters as the Honeynut Cheerios Bee and the starring character of another of Nickelodeon’s top rated cartoons, “Doug,” will discuss several topics of the voice-over business during his presentation.

Through the use of slides, video projection and voice-over antics, West will talk about voice-overs in radio and television advertising, how he got into the business and how characters such as Ren and Stimpy and the Honey Nut Cheerios Bee are created.

“It’s a program that reaches a lot of different people,” said Sandra Krones, graduate assistant for University Programing and Activities. “If you follow Ren and Stimpy or are interested in the voice-over business this event should be very entertaining.”

In addition to working with cartoons, West also has worked several years as a self-described “utility infielder” for radio personality Howard Stern in both his national radio show and his controversial late-night talk show. In the shows, West has imitated a variety of voices from Leona Helmsley to Nelson Mandella.

The event is free and open to all NIU students. It is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board’s Speakers Committee. For further information, contact CAB at 753-1580.
