Unbeaten streak ends on road

The streak is no more.

The NIU women’s soccer team was dealt a pair of losses over the weekend to end its all-time best seven-game unbeaten streak.

Friday’s match against Western Michigan for the top spot in the MAC west went to double overtime before the Broncos took a 2-1 victory. The loss dropped the Huskies (4-2-3).

Junior goalkeeper Carrie Dvorak had 10 saves but allowed the game winner that marked the first time she allowed more than one goal in a game all season.

“Carrie did an excellent job in net for us, keeping us in the game,” NIU coach Frank Horvat said. “And our offense had some excellent chances down the stretch, but we couldn’t convert.”

With Friday’s loss to the Broncos, NIU fell four points behind in the MAC west standings.

Huskie freshman Beth Matus scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season at the 70th minute to tie the game at one just 12 minutes after WMU took the lead.

“I cannot say enough about this team; we got down early but we bounced back into the game,” Horvat said. “This team showed a lot of dedication, character and heart, but we just came up a little short today.”

On Sunday, the Huskies traveled to Southwest Missouri State (5-2-1), where they were shut out 5-0 behind a Kate Hercules hat trick.

The Huskies found themselves down 1-0 only five minutes into the game after Hercules got the first of her three goals off of a corner kick.

After they allowed four goals in the first half, the Huskies were never able to bounce back. NIU managed only three shots on goal the entire game and seven shots total.

The Huskies gave up seven goals over their two games this weekend. They only allowed four goals in the previous seven games.
