Convo books big acts through Nov.
September 27, 2004
The next two months could be the Convocation Center’s busiest time ever, with six events scheduled for the main floor.
October’s events include the Homecoming Jam, featuring Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, Lil’ Scrappy and Shawnna and a Bob Dylan show. And November is twice as busy.
“We are going to keep our staff on their toes,” said Kevin Selover, marketing manager for the arena. “You could argue that this is going to be one of our busiest months ever.”
Four shows are scheduled for November, including Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson; Adoration: the Tour, featuring the Newsboys and Rebecca St. James; Incubus and Sesame Street Live.
Although rap artist Jay-Z was in town rehearsing with R & B artist R. Kelly last week, their concert will not be added to the Convo center schedule, Selover said.
“They did their full-blown rehearsal here,” Selover said. “Everything went real smooth. The road crews and personnel are gone now.”
The Northern Star ran an article Thurs., Sept. 23 informing students of a possible special concert before the official kickoff.
The Convo Center locked down the building during the visit, but students still showed up – mostly just to pick up football tickets – Selover said.
“Security was not a real big issue,” Selover said. “It just made security a little more aware.”
Although there was not a Jay-Z and R. Kelly show, rock band Incubus with special guests The Music will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12 at the Convo Center.
Floor tickets will be standing room only, and bowl seats will be reserved seating.
“It’s gonna be a great show for us,” Selover said.
The tour is in support of Incubus’ current album, “A Crow Left of the Murder,” which has sold more than 100,000 copies.
Incubus’ best-known songs, “Drive,” “Pardon Me” and “Wish You Were Here” have propelled the band to worldwide fame.
Incubus started its 2004 world tour March 3 in Tokyo. Their stop at the arena will be the group’s 116th scheduled show this year.
The band added five weeks of tour dates recently, including the NIU show, according to www.mtv.com.
The Nov. 12 show’s opening act, The Music, hails from the suburbs of Leeds, United Kingdom. Their first album, “You Might As Well Try to F— Me,” was released in the United Kingdom.
The Music replaced The Vines as the opening act for Incubus on this leg of the tour. The Vines are now touring in Australia with Blink 182.
