Another task for Huskies

After shutting out one leading scorer, the NIU men’s soccer team will face the same challenge against Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

The University of Illinois-Chicago’s Tonci Skroce had the Flames’ only two goals of the season before and after NIU’s shutout of UIC on Tuesday.

Today at 7 p.m., the Huskies (1-2) face the task of stopping IUPUI’s redshirt freshman Vangel Nacovski. After the game, NIU travels for a 1 p.m. Sunday game at Wright State.

Nacovski missed last season with a stress fracture, but leads the undefeated Jaguars, who won their first three games this year, with seven goals.

“We’re going to continue the way we’re playing and attacking,” NIU coach Steve Simmons said. “We’ll have to know where he’s at in the park, but most of his goals are off free kicks.”

The Jaguars’ first-year player is also coming off his best game of the season, with four goals in IUPUI’s 6-3 win over Loyola on Sunday.

Three other players have scored goals in assisting IUPUI to 11 goals in its three games.

“They’re on a roll, and it’s their first home game,” said Simmons of the Jaguars. “But we’ll be up for it after what happened in last year’s game.”
