Women’s soccer tops win total from last year in first 3 games
September 6, 2004
It’s taken three games and the NIU Women’s soccer team has already matched last season’s win total.
The Huskies shut-out Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne 1-0 on Friday at Huskie Soccer Field to improve to 3-0.
The Huskies are off to their best start ever and their three-game winning streak is the longest since 2002.
Leading the way on offense for NIU was junior midfielder Christie Ehrhardt, whose shot slipped past starting Mastadon goaltender Timeka Bailey for the only goal of the game.
The goal was assisted by junior midfielder Angeline Impelido. The assist gave her six points on the season, which is tied for fourth in the MAC.
Although the Huskies got the win, the game was not played as well as NIU coach Frank Horvat expected.
“We did not play as well as we did,” Horvat said. “But a win is a win. We will take the win.”
On Monday, junior goalie Carrie Dvorak was recognized as MAC Player of the Week along with Ball State’s Alison Becker. Dvorak is the first NIU player of the week since Anne Mucci won the award in 1998.
“I am really happy for Carrie,” Horvat said. “It’s a great honor to have her have two shut-outs in a row. She has definitely come up with some big saves so far in this young season. It’s great to see her recognized for her performance, as it says a lot for our defense as a team.”
Dvorak has 17 saves, while allowing one goal on the season. She sports a .947 save percentage and a .33 goals-against average. Dvorak also has not allowed a goal in over 200 minutes of play.
