Women’s soccer looks to make Huskies history
September 16, 2004
The NIU women’s soccer team will look to make history this weekend. The Huskies have a chance to break the team record for unbeaten streaks, but you wouldn’t know it talking to NIU coach Frank Horvat.
“We are not really focused on all of that,” said Horvat, whose team needs to avoid a loss in both games to break the record of six set by the 1998 Huskies. “We aren’t playing for the records. Wins are what we are looking for.”
The Huskies begin by hosting Miami-Ohio (2-3-0) at 4 p.m. today at Huskie Soccer Field. They will face the challenge of containing reigning MAC player of the year Ashley Swinehart, who has nine points in five games this season.
“We are not in a position where we can look past anyone,” Horvat said. “Miami has really been the top program in the MAC the past two years and we need to be on the top of our game.”
On Sunday, Ball State comes to DeKalb riding a streak of its own. The Cardinals team won its first four contests of the year and are unbeaten this season (4-0-2).
Horvat said that it is important to play well when it comes to conference games.
“These games are big, and we really got off to a good start against Marshall,” he said. “We are starting to believe that we can win games.”
To keep the unbeaten streak alive, the Huskies will need junior goalkeeper Carrie Dvorak to continue her consistent play. Dvorak has allowed only two goals all season and has registered three shutouts in the process.
“Carrie has had some big saves this year,” Horvat said. “She keeps us in games and helps us win.”
NIU is tied for third place in the MAC standings, trailing Kent State and Buffalo. Today’s game will be Miami’s conference opener.
