NIU Greek leader charged with DUI
September 14, 2004
Jose Iniguez, National Panhellenic Council vice president, was arrested at 3:41 a.m. Saturday and charged with driving the influence.
Iniguez apologized for “an unfortunate incident that [he] was involved in over the past weekend” in a written statement.
“I accept full responsibility for this and wanted to again extend my deepest apologies to all of those I represent as an officer of NPHC-NIU,” Iniguez wrote.
NPHC President Sheri Cox wrote in a similar statement that Iniguez will be held accountable through an internal process.
The 23-year-old Iniguez, a Chicago native, was driving on Douglas Hall Service Drive when police pulled him over. He was charged with DUI, DUI over .08 and driving too fast for conditions.
Iniguez’s responsibilities as vice president include planning events and representing all of the councils in the NPHC.
“It’s sad that this happened, because he does his duties,” said Crystal Hoppe, president of the Panhellenic Council. “At least nothing worse happened and he’s safe.”
Iniguez also serves as a voice for the council, representing all of the fraternities and sororities in the NPHC during city meetings, Hoppe said.
