Greek Row roads may go one-way
September 26, 2004
The Greek Row Revitalization Plan Committee discussed the possibility of making some Greek Row area streets one-way Thursday and also discussed the possibility of putting a drive-thru on Thirsty Liquors, 930 Pappas Drive.
Currently, Kimberly Drive and part of West Hillcrest Drive are designated as no parking zones. Allowing parking could make it difficult for emergency vehicles to park if other vehicles block the way.
The committee discussed the possibility of making Kimberly and Edgebrook drives one-way to help resolve this problem.
Lt. Carl Leoni of the DeKalb police said this is a good idea because it would be easier for emergency vehicles to get around. He said Edgebrook Drive is increasingly blocked during parties, and this makes it difficult for emergency vehicles to get through.
The next meeting will further discuss these issues. By that time, Sue Guio, community services planner said, the committee should have more information about the widths of the streets in Greek Row and detailed information about the no-parking zones off parts of Kimberly and West Hillcrest drives.
In other news, the committee discussed Thirsty Liquors’ possible drive-thru window. There was an agreement between the committee and Leoni that this wasn’t a good idea.
“First of all, if somebody walks in that store, you can get an idea of the person, whether they are intoxicated by the way they walk or smell,” Leoni said. “Whereas a person sitting in a car, more stuff can’t be picked up.”
Leoni said he also is concerned about the idea of a person using a fake ID and how hard it would be for a Thirsty Liquors employee to see the ID.
