‘Lunch ladies’ deserve to get equivalent pay
September 21, 2004
I am a kitchen helper at NIU, commonly and fondly referred to as a “lunch lady.” I’ve been working in a kitchen at NIU for 27 years. I make doughnuts and work as a cashier at the Northern Lights Grill.
I’ve been called “Ma” and soon “Grandma” by many kids, both from this area and others who live in the residence halls. I’ve been there for the kids not only as a worker, but also as a friend.
There are 39 other people (both men and women) who work in the same classification. Recently, we decided to join the other people who work in the kitchen and janitorial staff in their union, AFSCME. We felt the need to do this to get fair seniority rights.
At this time, we are in negotiations with NIU. Of course, we are down to the “nitty gritty”: MONEY.
If our salaries were averaged out, we would make $8.42 per hour. Of the 40 people, 18 have worked at NIU for more than 10 years. We work side-by-side with people making $14.47 and $14.59 per hour. We do the same work and have the same stress. The difference is they belong to the union.
We ask for everyone’s support to gain rights, respect and fair pay.
