Police search for thieves who stole safe
August 24, 2004
DeKalb police are still searching for the people responsible for two break-ins late Sunday night at two Sycamore Road stores.
Police said that the suspects broke into Pier 1, 2371 Sycamore Road, and made off with a safe and an undisclosed sum of money.
Police said the same people may have broken into Dollar Tree, 2350 Sycamore Road, on the same night. No money or merchandise, however, was stolen from that store, police said.
The suspects gained entry to the stores by forcing the front doors open with pry bars, police said.
Officials said they have a lead in both cases and are speaking with other local merchants about the incident.
“Safe burglaries are very rare,” DeKalb Police Lt. Jim Kayes said. “The crime rate [near both locations], other than shoplifting, is very low.”
The most recent safe burglary in DeKalb occurred about a year ago at Fatty’s Pub and Grill, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway, Kayes said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incidents to call the DeKalb Police Department at 748-8400.
