Radio the only option for Maryland

By Bob Grant

Taking a trip to Saturday’s NIU vs. Maryland football game in College Park would cost about $400 by plane and $230 by car.

If you are looking to avoid these costs – yet still follow the game – there are few options available.

Despite NIU’s upset of Maryland last year, no television outlet has decided to pick up this year’s rematch. Because of this, a satellite feed to NIU’s campus similar to last year’s Alabama game is out of the question.

“We talked to Maryland and they said they weren’t going to pick up the game,” NIU Assistant Athletic Director Scott Lowenberg said. “We tried to get this game on but it just didn’t work out.”

Since there’s no television broadcast for Saturday’s game, radio is your next best – and only – option.

WLBK (1360 AM) and NS* Radio (www.nsradio.com) will broadcast live from Maryland starting at 4:30 p.m. for WLBK and 5 p.m. for NS* Radio.

The only chance to view the game live is to take the 760-mile journey to Maryland. Almost half, 357, of the 800 tickets set aside for NIU fans have been bought, NIU Ticket Office Manager Mike Rockovich said.

“This is by far the best-selling road trip we have ever had,” Rockovich said.
