NIU guides new students

NI Guide student coordinator Amber Bindgren had been working together with Team NIU student coordinator Jen Donovan and Phyllis Dupre since March to plan Thursday’s move-in day.
Bindgren organized about 240 “Huskie loving” people to move in early enough to help their fellow NIU students move into their new homes.
The main focus of the NI guides was to make incoming freshmen feel welcome at NIU, said Batuhan “Bush” Acar, senior corporate communications major and NI Guide Lead.
Team NIU consists of faculty, staff and other group volunteers who take care of both NIU students and their parents.
“Mom’s a little upset; she’s losing her baby, and dad’s so frustrated from sitting in the traffic forever that you just have to try and keep them happy,” said Nicole Tipton, sophomore special education major and NI Guide.
Nancy Cora, mother of freshman nursing student Natalie Cora, said the NI Guides and Team NIU made moving in very easy and were very helpful.
NI Guides moved in Tuesday to attend their training, while NI Guide Leads moved in a week earlier for a longer training program.
“It’s pretty fun, actually. We get to meet new people,” said Ashley LePard, sophomore marketing major and Team NIU member.
Despite the efforts of the NI Guides and Team NIU, not everyone was totally satisfied.
“Crabby parents” complained about the elevators in Grant Towers, said Kim Miller, sophomore accounting major and a Grant Towers community adviser.
NI Guides received some complaints about a short power failure that affected NIU and the surrounding area. The power failure occurred at 10:12 a.m. and was due to a damaged electrical pole, according to ComEd.
The power failure was not felt for very long because the “equipment automatically switched,” said Paul Callighan, external affairs manager of ComEd.
