Stadium Club demolition delayed

The demolition of the Stadium Club, 1311 W. Lincoln Highway, is not expected to begin until October, with the replacing apartments being ready in May of 2005, owner Brad Rubeck said.

The DeKalb City Council approved demolition of the club on April 12 to make way for 24 new apartments. Rubeck said the building, which was poorly maintained, is an eyesore on Lincoln Highway. The project was originally expected to take place this month.

“Demolition is not going as quickly as anticipated,” Rubeck said.

Because there is limited space, Rubeck said the best use for the property is to build more apartments. Currently, Fatty’s Pub and Grille, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway, uses the property for overflow parking.

Sixth Ward Alderman Dave Baker agrees the building was in poor condition and said the new apartments would be a nice addition to the area.

“The new apartments will generate more real estate tax, and that will help the school system the most,” Baker said.

Still intended for two-bedroom apartments, they will include a washer, dryer, dishwasher, microwave, garbage disposal, kitchen island and central air. The appearance of the new building would remain consistent with the neighboring buildings of Stadium View II, Rubeck said.

Given the opportunity to oppose the demolition project at the city council meeting, Rubeck said they have had no complaints from surrounding apartments.

“Lincolnshire [West] Apartments knows [about the project]; they have had no objections.”
