Women’s soccer begins season 2-0

Who would have guessed that coming off a 3-15-1 season in 2003, the NIU women’s soccer team would have two wins in its first two games?

The Huskies beat Western Illinois 4-0 in the home opener Monday night.

Heading into the season, NIU coach Frank Horvat said the offense needed to score more. The Huskies responded with six goals in two games.

Leading the way was sophomore forward Elaine Eliadis with one unassisted goal and an assist.

Her unassisted goal was actually not scored by her. Eliadis got the ball from a corner kick, and beat her opponent, but her shot went wide left. However, a WIU defender accidentally kicked it in.

“No, they scored the goal, I assisted them,” Eliadis said, laughing.

The other goal of the first half came by junior midfielder Angeline Impelido. Impelido was assisted by Eliadis.

In the second half, Impelido had to be carried off the field and did not return to action. Horvat said it was cramps because of poor hydration and he doesn’t expect her to miss any playing time.

With Impelido out, the team scored two more goals. The third goal for the Huskies was by freshman midfielder Megan Kolkay assisted by junior Becky Hott.

The final goal of the night was by freshman Beth Matus.

“We had a great crowd,” Horvat said. “Hopefully the crowd enjoyed themselves, they saw a good match and will go ‘You got to go watch women’s soccer.’”

Note: NIU lost its only backup goalkeeper, Elizabeth Slouka, to off-season shoulder surgery which she is still rehabbing from.

The Huskies will hold open tryouts for the next two weeks. Anyone with high school or club goalkeeping experience is preferred. For information contact Horvat at 753-9535.
