Robert L. Caswell, director of Procurement Services, died June 27 in Madison, Wis. He was 67.

The cause was colon cancer, said Becky May, assistant director of Procurement Services.

Caswell worked in Procurement Services for 14 years and had been with the university 20 years.

“Always with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, Bob had a good word or playful greeting for everyone he met,” May said. “Bob was a great boss.”

He made even-handed decisions and demonstrated exemplary discipline and a strong dedication to NIU, she said.

Outside of work, Caswell was an avid reader with a passion for aviation history.

A graduate of the University of Illinois, Caswell owned and operated a health food store in DeKalb for 10 years before working at NIU.

A memorial service was held June 30 at the Holmes Student Center.
