Candidate to stop in DeKalb
July 26, 2004
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama is scheduled to speak at a rally scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday at Hopkins Park.
“We are expecting a good turnout of voters from all political persuasions to hear Barack,” said Eileen Dubin, DeKalb Democratic Party chairwoman. “The rally will be an opportunity to both hear him speak and for people to articulate their concerns to him.”
Obama is a state senator from the 13th District in Chicago. Obama’s platform is based on economic issues, specifically on employment, retirement and health care, according to a press release from the DeKalb Democratic Party.
The Republican party has not named an opponent to replace Jack Ryan who withdrew from the race last month after details about his divorce were released.
Obama is scheduled to speak tonight at the Democratic National Convention in Boston as the first keynote speaker from Illinois in more than 100 years.
Also at the rally will be DeKalb County candidates who will share their ideas and meet with local residents.
Joining him for the rally will be current U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, D-Chicago, and Ruben Zamora, the Democratic opponent of Dennis Hastert, R-Yorkville, for the 14th District’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Obama has been outspoken in his criticism of the current administration in the White House, specifically its record on jobs and employment, according to the press release.
Obama’s main concern is that jobs are being created, but that those jobs are replacing higher-paying jobs, the party said. Obama also has led initiatives for the Hyde Park district to expand the KidCare program that provides health care for 20,000 Illinois children.
