Police look for clues leading to predawn fondler

By Dan Patterson

DeKalb police and DeKalb County Sheriff’s police are searching for a man who entered two apartments during the July 4 weekend and fondled one woman.

In the first case, the man fondled the victim as she slept in her apartment in the 1200 block of West Hillcrest Drive, police said.

The woman called police at about 5 a.m. July 3, after an unknown man entered her apartment through the unlocked front door.

The woman woke when the intruder touched her, and the man fled, she told police.

While in the apartment, the man took property worth less than $100.

The next morning, at about 6 a.m., DeKalb County Sheriff’s police were called to a similar incident in the 1400 block of Twombly Road.

The man, presumed by police to be the same intruder as in the Hillcrest Drive case, removed a screen from a window and reached through to unlock the door, police said.

The man made his way to the woman’s bedroom, where she lay asleep. She awoke to see the man approaching her bed, police said.

The woman told police the man left the apartment when she screamed.

The two police agencies are investigating the incidents and have received a few phone calls but “nothing solid” for leads, DeKalb Police Sgt. Gary Spangler said Monday.

The department released a composite sketch from the victims’ descriptions.

Police are advising residents to lock their doors and windows before they go to bed at night.

Persons with information regarding the case can call DeKalb police at 748-8400.
