Fraternity’s fundraiser nets $2,500 for charity

Sigma Alpha Epsilon ended its annual Paddy Murphy philanthropy fundraiser Sunday with a grand total of $2,500 to donate to the Children’s Miracle Network.

The week’s events were held in honor of Murphy, who was murdered by Al Capone in the 1920s. According to legend, Murphy stole money and alcohol from Capone and his gang during prohibition and brought the loot back to his fellow fraternity brothers. However, Capone realized what was happening and killed Murphy.

Last Monday, SAE reenacted the infamous murder of Murphy with a shoot-out at the Holmes Student Center. Later in the week, sororities competed in a window contest to select Murphy’s bereaved wife, and the houses were decorated for a funeral procession on Thursday.

Heather Otto of Sigma Kappa won the competition and claimed the title of Mrs. Paddy Murphy.

The events concluded this weekend in a two-day softball tournament at Katz Field on Dresser Road that ended with championship games early Sunday evening. Tau Kappa Epsilon took the win for the men’s games, and Sigma Kappa won the women’s division.

SAE raised money through donations and also held a raffle drawing Sunday. Tickets for the raffle were sold during the entire month of March. The winner received a one-night stay at Embassy Suites near O’Hare in Chicago.

Matthew White, SAE’s director of philanthropy, said he was pleased to see how well the fundraiser went this year and appreciated those who contributed to the events.

“I am grateful to NIU and the entire DeKalb community for making the week’s events successful and charitable,” he said.
