Gettin’ in step
April 4, 2004
The Holmes Student Center’s Carl Sandburg Auditorium overflowed with spectators for Sigma Gamma Rho’s 27th annual “Greek Scene” step show Saturday.
Tia Speat, president of Sigma Gamma Rho, said more people came than expected. Some people had to be turned away because the auditorium was filled to capacity.
“[Sigma Gamma Rho] sincerely apologizes to anyone who had to be turned away,” she said.
The step show featured several organizations from the National Pan-Hellenic Council as well as S.I.S.T.E.R.S. and Dynamic Destruction. Several organizations stomped their way to defeat, as fraternities and sororities, with the exception of Sigma Gamma Rho, competed for the $250 prize.
Greek organizations who participated included Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Lambda Gamma, Alpha Phi Gamma, Phi Beta Sigma and Iota Phi Theta.
The theme for the step show was “I Remember Way Back When.” Tara McDonald, a member of Sigma Gamma Rho, said the theme was universal and would bring out the creativity in the Greek organizations.
Each organization put a different spin on the theme. For example, Sigma Gamma Rho featured an elementary school theme; Delta Sigma Theta had a 1930s gangster theme; and Sigma Lambda Gamma had a ’80s theme. Phi Beta Sigma’s performance featured a skit of two old men reflecting on their days stepping in a step show.
“I was very pleased with the performances of all the organizations,” Speat said.
Delta Sigma Theta and Phi Beta Sigma both won the $250 prize.
