NIU speakers were awarded for their achievements at the annual American Forensics Association’s National Individual Events Tournament.

The competition, which placed two NIU speakers in the top 13 of the nation and one as an All-American, was held at California State University at Long Beach.

“NIU Forensics is typically very strong in these competitive activities, and we are very proud of this year’s national individual events team,” said John Butler, director of Forensics and an assistant communication professor.

Senior English major Nicole Carreno placed in the top 13 in Communication Analysis. Junior history major Randy Yedinak placed in the top 13 in After Dinner Speaking.

“I personally found this year’s performances to be some of the best to come out of our program,” Butler said. “Their public address pieces were exceptionally well-researched and timely, and their oral interpretation selections were some of the most challenging and innovative works I’ve seen as a coach.”

Heather Short, a senior speech-language and pathology/audiology major, also was named an All-American. Only 15 students from across the country are selected for this honor. Short is the first All-American in NIU history.

“These students developed and practiced their work for many months, working with members and coaches for hours. Not only were these pieces entertaining, [but] they covered challenging subjects of great social importance,” Butler said.
