PRISM hosts Gay Jam

NIU students, faculty members and alumni will get their drag on Saturday.

The eighth annual Gay Jam, which begins at 7 p.m. at the Holmes Student Center’s Diversions Lounge, will feature comedy acts, dancers and performers dressed as the opposite sex.

The free event is being sponsored by PRISM, NIU’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organization, and will feature a raffle to benefit the Questioning Youth Center and the United Campus Ministries Center for Spirituality and Justice.

“It’s always a riot,” said Robb Schuldt, co-president of PRISM. “There are usually no other shows like it in or around NIU or DeKalb, especially with some of the outfits people wear on stage.”

Gay Jam is part of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Awareness Month. Schuldt said the event has been a success so far.

“It’s a way to open up to everybody and make everybody feel welcome,” he said.

Angelina Keselburg, PRISM events coordinator, said events like these let people see another side of the of LGBT community.

“With the gay marriage controversy right now, everything toward the gay community is so political,” she said. “This is just a chance for fun.”
