The NIU women’s tennis team lost a pair of MAC matches on the road this weekend.
The Huskies lost 4-3 to Miami-Ohio on Friday before falling 6-1 to Marshall on Saturday.
“Right now, we are going to come back and get prepared for the conference tournament,” NIU coach Laura Scott said. “It doesn’t matter who we play. They are going to be a tough opponent.”
The two matches closed out the regular season, leaving NIU a No. 6 seed for the MAC tournament, which starts Friday at NIU.
On Sunday, the Huskies (8-9 overall, 4-5 MAC) found out their opponent would be No. 3-seeded Eastern Michigan.
NIU’s Cassie Drake picked up the only win for the Huskies on Saturday, defeating Alice Sukner 5-7, 6-4, 1-0.
“We flat-out got beat by a better tennis team today,” Scott said. “We were a bit drained from yesterday but fought as hard as we could.”
NIU’s Branka Savic, Kristi McIntyre and Drake won their matches in the loss to Miami-Ohio.
Savic beat Katrina Lomidze 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Cassie Drake won her No. 2 singles match over Linda Jirouskova 7-5, 6-0.
McIntyre rebounded from a first set loss to beat Nancy Wiegand in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
“Branka, Cassie, and Kristi really stepped up for us today,” Scott said. “We played very hard against a very good team today and gave Miami everything it could handle.”
