Men’s tennis to host conference foe Buffalo
April 2, 2004
The NIU men’s tennis team will attempt to keep its seven-game winning streak going as it enters MAC play against Buffalo and Western Michigan this weekend.
NIU’s match versus Buffalo at 1 p.m. Saturday will be at the Anderson Courts if weather permits. In case of rain, the match will move to the Rockford Clock Tower Resort Hotel courts, NIU coach Pontus Hiort said.
The second match will be against Western Michigan at 2 p.m. Sunday in Kalamazoo, Mich.
NIU has staked itself to a 12-3 non-conference record entering MAC play and hasn’t lost a team match since dropping a 4-3 decision March 3 at Alabama-Birmingham. During their current stretch, the Huskies swept their last three opponents 7-0, giving them 21 individual match wins in a row.
NIU is led by the senior trio of Willy Gali, Juan Pablo Barriga and Aaron Forsberg, who have compiled a 49-20 record in singles play. Hiort said he has been impressed by the play of freshman Jack Komar (19-6).
The Huskies defeated Buffalo the last two years 13 matches to one in individual performances. Despite Buffalo’s 6-9 overall record, Hiort doesn’t take the Bulls lightly.
“Buffalo is a much improved team,” he said. “They have a good crop of juniors, so it won’t be an easy match.”
Buffalo’s juniors are led by Nick Zieziula (23-11 record) with freshman Mike Rockman also contributing with a 17-13 mark.
Including the match with Buffalo, the Huskies play five of their final six matches at home, where they have yet to lose a team match this season.
The Huskies’ second match of the weekend will feature a rematch of last year’s MAC tournament semi-final with Western Michigan. This year, the Broncos are ranked No. 57 in the nation with a 19-5 record and will be out to avenge their season-ending loss to the Huskies.
Western Michigan was picked to finish first in the MAC in a preseason poll and is led by senior Ravi Pathanjali with a 24-7 record.
“I think we match up pretty evenly with Western Michigan,” Hiort said. “It just depends on which team will come better prepared.”
