Hernan Rivera, a sophomore fashion merchandising major, was crowned Mr. Papi Chulo Thursday night at Gamma Phi Omega’s second annual “Mr. Papi Chulo” contest.

Eliza Higgs, president of Gamma Phi Omega, said the sorority had been planning since last semester for its second Mr. Papi Chulo contest. Higgs said the contest improved 100 percent from last year. She said there were about 350 people in attendance.

There were nine contestants. Contestant Jaime Garcia said he had been preparing for the contest since February.

“It was worth it because this contest allowed us stray away from the stereotypical male,” he said. “We were able to be ourselves.”

The contest began with each contestant introducing himself and giving a philosophical quote. Each contestant modeled formal and sleepwear. Comedy, singing and stepping were among the creative expressions exhibited in the talent competition.

There were many audience members who came to support certain contestants. Senior OMIS major Candace Smith came to support contestant Kiarri Andrews.

“I think the show was excellent because each contestant had unique personalities, and it reflected through the talent portion,” Smith said.

Rivera said the contest was hard work, but he still had fun.

“All the guys were talented and put in hard work, but there can only be one winner,” Rivera said.

Higgs said she and her sorority sisters were pleased with the turnout of the contest. She said more people attended the contest than expected.

“Each contestant was great,” she said. Higgs also said she would like to thank everyone who helped with the contest and that next year the contest will be even better.
