Summer programs added

The DeKalb Park District has offered more than 20 new programs this year.

From skateboarding lessons to ballroom dancing, the district’s programs cater to all age groups, said Colleen Belmont, park district program director.

This summer, the park district will include a camp for preschoolers.

“The preschool mini camp hasn’t been done for a while,” Belmont said.

The structure of the summer day camp has changed this year. Instead of offering five two-week sessions, the camp will run 11 one-week sessions.

Parents can register children on a weekly basis for camp, which benefits parents who want to send their children on a non-consecutive basis, Belmont said.

“For the day camp, we are doing themed weeks this year,” Belmont said. Planned themes include master gardeners, the solar system, sports week and pirates of the sea week.

The park district also will offer a variety of adult programs during the summer.

The park is collaborating with the American Red Cross to offer a CPR class in which adults will learn to use an automated external defibrillator.

A golf program will be hosted by an outside organization offering lessons at all skill levels. The district also will host parent-child tournaments and club championships.

Another adult-oriented program scheduled for the beginning of summer is ballroom dancing.

“Complaints were made that there is no place in DeKalb to ballroom dance, so the park is hosting a ballroom dance on May 7,” Belmont said.

“Some of the programs are on a trial basis to see appeal to residents,” Belmont said. New ideas either replace current programs or are added to the list of more than 50 programs, she said.

The programming expansion requires the district to hire temporary help for the summer.

For summer employment, interested applicants can go to one of three DeKalb Park District buildings: the Haish Gymnasium at 303 S. Ninth St.; the Sports and Recreation Center at 1765 S. Fourth St.; or Hopkins Park at 1403 Sycamore Road.
