Trio of Huskies picked up
April 25, 2004
Cornerback Randee Drew, receiver P.J. Fleck and safety Akil Grant weren’t among the 255 players drafted this weekend, but all three signed free agent deals with NFL franchises Sunday.
Drew and Fleck were picked up by the San Francisco 49ers, while the Tennessee Titans signed Grant.
Linebacker Nick Duffy was invited to the Chicago Bears’ mini camp this weekend in Lake Forest. He said the Bears told him if they like what they see, they’ll sign him as a free agent.
The other five Huskies eligible for the draft haven’t been picked up yet.
Drew grew up a 49ers fan and was ecstatic about the opportunity.
“It’s a dream come true,” Drew said. “I had a feeling I was going to be a Niner because they called my agent in the fifth round and again in the seventh round, and they said they were going to pick me up no matter what. I feel like I can play and compete, but just like when I came to NIU without a scholarship, I have to prove myself here as well and make the team.”
All three players signed two-year free-agent deals, with the ability to make the league minimum if they make the team.
Grant said that as many as 10 teams were in contact with him and his agent over the weekend, before Tennessee signed him as a free agent.
Fleck wasn’t anticipating getting drafted but was keeping his fingers crossed and it paid off.
“After the last pick was called, about a minute later my agent called. And, signed sealed and delivered, I was a 49er,” Fleck said. “I just wanted an opportunity. I didn’t care where.”
