Internet makes the grade

Hiding the mail and forging parents’ signatures no longer will work for DeKalb School District students.

Starting this school year, the district began providing parents with access to their children’s report cards online through the Skyward system.

“It’s part of a system we already have,” said Linell Lasswell, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction.

Parents of middle school and high school students can find their children’s grades online at the schools’ Web sites.

Parents also can find the online lunch money and check their personal information to make sure it is correct.

The Web sites also list any disciplinary problems or detentions children may have had. Attendance records also are listed.

Parents are given a family password, so information is not open to everybody.

Laura Adkins, who works in the dean and attendance office at DeKalb High School, said parents call all the time about the system. For example, they call if they see their child was absent from a class when they should have been there.
