Volunteers to participate in cleanup day Saturday
April 15, 2004
Lions and scouts will crawl through wooded areas in DeKalb County this weekend searching for trash.
The DeKalb County Forest Preserve planned two events for Saturday’s volunteer day. The first event, sponsored by the Sycamore Lions Club, is the annual Great Western Trail Cleanup.
Ed Kuhn, Sycamore Lions Club president, said his organization sponsors the cleanup of the bike path in Sycamore. He said his group adopted the trail years ago and only recently decided to open the cleanup to other organizations.
This Sycamore portion of the bike trail extends three miles from East State Street to County Line Road. The trail runs 18 miles from Sycamore to St. Charles.
The Lions Club will clean up trash but not clear brush or trim the foliage. Kuhn said people on work release from the county trim the foliage.
Kuhn was unsure who will attend the event this year.
“We don’t know until we get there,” Kuhn said. The event begins at 8 a.m. and will finish around noon. The beginning of the bike path is across the street from the Brian Bemis Chevrolet dealership, 1875 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore.
The other cleanup event to be held Saturday is at Potawatomi Woods. The Kirkland Volunteer Fire Department, local girl and boy scout troops and the Smallmouth Bass Alliance are taking part.
Chris Smith, a Genoa emergency medical technician working for the Kirkland Fire Department, said they will comb through the forest preserve picking up trash and excess branches. He described the event as a yearly beautification project.
Potawatomi Woods is located on Kirkland Road, one quarter-mile north of Kirkland. The event begins at 9 a.m. and should last until 1 p.m.
