NIU lacrosse club keeps hope alive
April 4, 2004
Two different days. Two different teams. Two completely different outcomes for the NIU lacrosse team this weekend.
“We were a different team yesterday,” team president and captain Jason Magnuson said Sunday after losing to Illinois State University 13-0.
That different team the Huskies (1-2 overall) put on the field Saturday beat conference foe Southeastern Missouri University 11-1 to keep their playoff hopes alive.
“[Saturday] was a good sign for our team, beating a big team in our conference,” said Magnuson, who is unable to play because of a separated shoulder. “We were confident, and we really just played a different way compared to [Sunday].”
Shane Scott led the team in goals with five, and freshman attacker Sid Ronning also put three balls in the goal for the Huskies against SEMU (0-4).
On Sunday, Magnuson was looking to see where his Division B team stood against ISU, which is at a higher level at Division A.
The Huskies went into the half down 4-0.
In the second half, the Huskies had no answers as they gave up nine goals. At one point, an ISU defenseman took the ball the length of the field and scored without having to dodge a single NIU player.
“There is no explanation for our performance,” Magnuson said. “We just fell apart. [ISU] really got in our heads and made us play timid, but despite that, we were just lazy.
“This game [against ISU] didn’t hurt us. It would have been nice to beat them, but it doesn’t matter. We won the game we needed this weekend, and that’s what matters to me.”
