LGBT event to connect religion, sexuality
April 12, 2004
NIU’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community will host “Bridging the Divide: A Conversation about Religion and Homosexuality” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the United Campus Ministries, 633 W. Locust St.
As part of LGBT Awareness Month, the event will focus on the relationship between sexual orientation and religion.
“This is to show that a person’s sexuality doesn’t necessarily have to affect their religious belief,” said Jay Mayer, administrative assistant at United Campus Ministries.
Mayer said the event will give equal attention to religion and homosexuality.
“We’re hoping that people can understand that religion doesn’t denounce homosexuality,” Mayer said. “Faith and sexuality can co-exist.”
As homosexuality and religion has been an issue for a long time, the event will help people understand how religious groups view same-sex marriages, said Suzanne Willis, faculty adviser for PRISM.
Margie Cook, coordinator of the LGBT Resource Center, is among the four speakers who will speak at the event.
