Dance show pays tribute to Broadway

NIU’s School of Theatre and Dance performed “Give My Regards To Broadway” Thursday through Sunday at the Stevens Building’s O’Connell Theatre, showcasing 10 Broadway hits of American musical theater. Sunday’s performance attracted a full house.

Featured selections included “Broadway Melody Ballet” from “Singing in the Rain,” “Cell Block Tango” from “Chicago” and “Beauty School Dropout” from “Grease.”

Noah Fried, a junior theater arts major, said performers have practiced for the production since the beginning of the semester. He said he was excited because the dances were choreographed by different people.

Some of Fried’s performances included “Shoeless Joe,” “Hand Jive” and “Anything Goes.”

The production was choreographed by Judith Chitwood and Paula Frasz, associate professors of the School of Theatre and Dance; Randall Newsom, coordinator of dance; and Karen Williamson, assistant professor of the School of Theatre and Dance.

Newsom also served as the master of ceremonies, introducing every piece with its history and background.

Jim Scholl, a Lake In The Hills resident, said he enjoyed the show very much.

“I was surprised to see the actual movements I’ve seen back in the days,” Scholl said. He said the dance moves in “Hand Jive,” a piece from “Grease,” were the same as what they had in the 1960s.

“Give My Regards To Broadway” was the final production of the School of Theatre and Dance for this season, said David Booth, marketing director for the School of Theatre and Dance. The fall season will open on Sept. 16 with a performance of “The Birds.”
