Women’s tennis team splits

With its fourth conference win Saturday against Toledo, the NIU women’s tennis team wrapped up its home schedule and assured a first-round bye in the MAC tournament.
The Huskies (8-7 overall, 4-3 MAC) split their weekend matches with the loss coming to Eastern Michigan on Friday.
NIU started the weekend winning the doubles point against Eastern Michigan (12-5, 5-2) but dropped all of the singles matches to finish with a 6-1 loss.
“They’re a championship-caliber team,” NIU coach Laura Scott said of Eastern Michigan. “I told our team it was one of their best efforts in terms of quality of play all year. Nobody gave up, and they fought for every single point. We didn’t lose a match today; we just got beat.”
The Huskies kept the match close as No. 2 Cassie Drake and No. 3 Karrie Tyioran both went to three sets but lost their super-tiebreaks 10-5 and 10-8, respectively.
NIU bounced back the next day with a 6-1 victory over Toledo (2-14, 0-6). The Huskies once again won the doubles point by taking two of the three matches from the Rockets, highlighted by Drake and Tyioran’s 8-0 shutout of Jen Meister and Monica Ribero at the No. 2 doubles slot.
Tyioran set the pace for the singles matches with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Meister.
“It was my last match on these home courts, so it was kind of sad,” Tyioran said. “But I really wanted to do well in doubles and singles, and I came out, and I did what I’m supposed to do.”
