Music chapter presents play
April 22, 2004
NIU’s chapter of the American Choral Directors Association will sponsor a student production of “Li’l Abner” this weekend at Kishwaukee College.
Jon Dolieslager, a vocal music education major and director of the play, said the production of “Li’l Abner” is ACDA’s big project this year.
“Li’l Abner” was written by Norman Panama and Nelvin Frank, with music by Gene DePaul.
Dolieslager said the performance provides a chance for non-theater majors to be part of a production.
“[ACDA] does a lot more than just bring people to sing,” Dolieslager said.
The ACDA sponsors performance groups, guest lecturers, musicians and voice recitals. In the past, ACDA has brought in performers such as the Erik Westberg Vocal Ensemble and offered a three-day residency for the American composer Libby Larsan.
Future programs for the fall semester include a music workshop for students and the community.
“ACDA is a collection of students who are actively involved in promoting choral music,” said Eric Johnson, director of choral activities in the music department and an ACDA adviser. “We focus on the advocacy of choral arts and all its manifestations.”
ACDA is part of a national group whose goal is to facilitate and promote choral music, Johnson said.
According to the ACDA Web site, about 18,000 choral directors currently represent singers across the United States. The directors hold annual conventions and workshops for members to broaden their knowledge and experience in choral music.
The convention helps members participate with other people all over the world, said Dolieslager, who participated in the New York convention in February 2003.
Although most members are music majors, ACDA is open to everyone. For questions regarding membership, call Johnson at 753-7984.
