March 2, 2004
NIU men’s basketball player Al Sewasciuk scored all 15 of his points in the first half to top his season high of nine points against Central Michigan on Monday night.
After a pre-game ceremony that honored Sewasciuk and three other seniors, the 6-foot-4 guard added four rebounds to his season high in scoring, with 12 of his points coming off four three-pointers. Sewasciuk shot 66.7 percent from behind the three-point arc.
“I couldn’t have asked for more,” Sewasciuk said. “I finally got my confidence back and got some good looks from my teammates.”
Sewasciuk played 16 of his 22 minutes in the first half.
Todd Peterson played less than a minute in the first half but came off the bench in the second half to make four three-pointers, helping NIU strengthen its lead over CMU.
“When those two guys are on with their shots, it makes our offense more potent,” NIU coach Rob Judson said. “It just shows that this group is really playing together.”
Sewasciuk and Peterson combined to go 8-of-11 on three-point shots, shooting 64.3 percent from the field.
“They’re good shooters, and they did their job,” CMU coach Jay Smith said. “Our guys didn’t do their job; they did.”
Peterson scored 12 with four rebounds on the night, shooting 4-of-5 from behind the three-point line.
“Todd is a great rhythm shooter, and he got in a great rhythm in the second half,” Judson said.
Peterson made his four three-pointers in the span of 6:02, helping NIU turn a 13-point lead into 21 points.
“He didn’t really have to say it,” NIU senior Perry Smith said of getting Peterson the ball. “Every time he shot the ball, he made it. We just gave him the ball.”
