Pretty Poodle Week kicks off

Sigma Gamma Rho sorority will host “Pretty Poodle Week” this week.

Rosie Drumgoole, member of Sigma Gamma Rho, said the event got its name from the sorority’s official mascot, the poodle.

“All of our events will be fun, educational and interactive,” Drumgoole said.

Today, the sorority will host an event called “Sigma Salsa Night.” Alpha Psi Lambda will assist Sigma Gamma Rho with the event, which will help students learn how to salsa dance, Drumgoole said.

On Wednesday, the sorority, along with Zeta Phi Beta, will host a panel discussion called “Am I My Sister’s Keeper?” The panel will address the issues of sisterhood with sororities and females at NIU, Drumgoole said.

On Thursday, a speaker will discuss depression and how it affects black women.

The Women’s Health Symposium, which is sponsored by Sigma Gamma Rho and S.I.S.T.E.R.S., will be on Saturday. A series of speakers will discuss issues that include hair textures, image concerns and sexually transmitted diseases, Drumgoole said.

Drumgoole said students should come to the events because it is a good way to learn what the sorority is about. She said students should come to learn about themselves.

“Students will have a chance to get questions answered that they wouldn’t normally be able to ask,” Drumgoole said.
