DeKalb resident killed in Tuesday morning car accident

A 54-year-old DeKalb man was killed Tuesday morning after his truck struck a light pole at the intersection of Peace and Barber Greene roads.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m., Curtis J. Ashley was driving his Ford truck southbound on Peace Road in the right turn lane when he failed to make the turn onto Barber Greene Road. Ashley then struck a traffic-light pole, said Lt. Van Bomar of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s office. Ashley was not wearing a seat belt, Bomar said.

Ashley was pronounced dead at 9:08 a.m. at Kishwaukee Community Hospital.

Ashley died of injuries sustained during the crash, but a specific cause is not known yet, said Dave Jacobson, chief deputy coroner for DeKalb County.

Autopsy results are pending, Jacobson said.

Early reports said Ashley may have been drowsy or asleep at the wheel, Bomar said. Twenty minutes prior to the accident, sheriff’s officers received a complaint of reckless driving involving a truck that matched the description of Ashley’s vehicle, he said.

There was no indication that Ashley attempted to turn at the intersection or that he tried to avoid the pole, Bomar said. The speed limit at intersection is 55 mph, and he may have been traveling that fast at the time of the accident, he said.

Ashley had to be extricated from his totaled truck. Sycamore and DeKalb fire departments responded to the scene.
