Women’s studies sponsors activism panel

By Daralyn Richardson

NIU’s Women’s Studies Program is sponsoring a panel about women’s activism.

The panel will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Reavis Hall, Room 211.

Each year during Women’s History Month, the program hosts a panel that focuses on the theme for the month. This year’s theme is “Women’s Movements.”

“We thought it would be really interesting to focus on student activism instead of just having adults talk about their aspect of it,” said Jolene Skinner, program coordinator for the Women’s Studies Program.

The program invited students representing different interests to talk about their involvement in activism. The goal of the event is to show students activism is important and can be easy.

“It is a great chance for people who are activists to see and network with other people who have similar interests,” Skinner said.

The panel will be informal, and a moderator will ask the panelists questions. Audience members are encouraged to ask questions as well, Skinner said. After the panel is over, they are encouraged to meet with the panelists and, hopefully, meet people who are interested in the same things.

“Faculty is encouraged to come as well, and all events are open to the public, so even community members [may attend],” Skinner said. “But this is mainly for students to meet other students doing things that are important.”
