Bikini contest gets local bar into hot water
March 16, 2004
Starbusters Bar & Grill is prohibited from holding any type of bikini contest for two years and will have to pay a $2,000 fine by July 16.
The establishment at 930 Pappas Drive was charged for allowing two female minors to enter and remain on the premises on Oct. 4.
The punishment was given at Monday’s liquor hearing.
City Attorney Margo Ely said the two underage females participated in a bikini contest the establishment sponsored.
According to the DeKalb Municipal Code, it is OK for underagers to enter Class A establishments as long as they are employees and are working.
Ely said there was a disagreement about whether the underage females who participated were Starbusters employees.
Also, it was agreed that in future contests, no underagers would be allowed to participate, said Jordan Gallagher, who represented the establishment.
Ely said the underagers were not served and did not consume alcohol, and they had their parents’ permission to participate. The girls’ parents were not present during the contest.
The last time Starbusters violated a liquor ordinance was last March. It was charged with allowing minors into the establishment and serving them alcohol.
