Leisure show to make home at arena
March 18, 2004
The 2004 DeKalb Area Home and Leisure Show is expected to pack in crowds April 23 to April 25 when it comes to the NIU Convocation Center.
Kevin Selover, marketing manager for the Convocation Center, said the event’s promoter anticipates more than 5,000 visitors over the course of the weekend.
This is the first time the show is coming to DeKalb, Selover said. The show contacted the arena looking to expand its spring shows in Rockford, he said.
The purpose of the show is to bring ideas for communities’ building, remodeling, decor and landscaping needs.
According to an NIU press release, a feature house with separate room displays will be in the center of the arena. Rooms displayed will include a media room, kitchen, home office, deck with sunroom and a garden display.
On April 24 and 25 special guests Dean Johnson and Robin Hartl from the PBS show “Hometime” will stop in as part of the show. The tandem will do several shows each day.
The goal of the show is to help people in the community achieve professional-looking results for their homes.
Johnson and Hartl won’t be the only guest appearances during the weekend. Oscar, an interactive robot, also will be at the show.
According to www.oscartherobot.com, the robot is a “people magnet” that provides entertainment and the ability to greet guests in 15 different languages
Selover said the schedule of events will be announced later in March.
The event is $5 for general admission and $3 for seniors. Children under 12 years old are admitted free.
