Officials investigate fire

SYCAMORE – Sycamore firefighters and state fire marshals still are investigating Monday’s fire at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 327 S. Main St. Church officials, meanwhile, are scrambling to get things back to normal for parishioners, despite not having a building for worship.
Fire officials have yet to determine what caused the blaze that engulfed the church shortly after 5 p.m. Monday.
Firefighters have begun demolishing the 66-year-old building, while they look for indication on how and where the fire may have started, Sycamore Fire Lt. Cary Niewold said. The possibility of arson has not yet been discussed as a cause, Niewold added.
While the church awaits its future, the city of Sycamore has offered office space in the downtown Sycamore Center, 308 W. State St.
“The main thing is the immediate needs for the congregation,” Sycamore Mayor John Swedberg said. “We’ve done everything [St. John’s] has asked for.”
The fire devastated many people and lots are stepping in to help out, Swedberg said.
Church services on Sunday will be held at the Sycamore High School auditorium, located on Spartan Trail in Sycamore.
The church has contacted all members by phone and through the media informing them of the change, St. John secretary Angela Warren said.
The church also has continued to hold other regularly scheduled events. Wednesday night’s youth group meeting was held at the Sycamore Center, and other groups have met in parishioner’s homes, Warren said.
The fire has been the talk of the town as of late, Swedberg said, not only because of its size but also because of the amount of people it affected.
“For most of us, St. John has always been there,” Swedberg said.
