Greek groups selected

The time line has been set for the new fraternities and sorority that have been selected to come to NIU, said Chris Juhl, activities adviser for Greek Affairs, at the Greek Life Standards Board meeting Tuesday.

Social fraternity Pi Kappa Phi, Asian fraternity Chi Sigma Tau and Asian-interest sorority Kappa Phi Lambda have been selected as the three groups to join NIU for fall 2004.

Their national headquarters should receive the official letter of notification by March 1, Juhl said.

The other two fraternities will come in one at a time for the following two years, with Phi Kappa Psi joining by fall 2005 and Sigma Nu entering by fall 2006.

These groups are not the only organizations hoping to start chapters on NIU ground.

“Since we decided on these groups coming in, I’ve had four other organizations call me wanting to come here,” Juhl said.

The organizations have contacted Juhl by phone, he said, but have not yet written a formal request.

As far as housing, the fraternities that are coming to NIU may have to wait. Before a fraternity can actually get a house, they need to take time to develop their organization’s members first, Juhl said.

“It takes a good year to get a base of students together,” Juhl said.

The GLSB decided the next expansion time will be fall 2006, Juhl said.

Other groups are trying to get recognition to enter NIU as well but have missed cut-off times, said LaVerne Gyant, GLSB board member and director for the Center for Black Studies.
