Centers to be built

Two shopping centers currently are in the works for Genoa.
The Prairie Ridge Pointe Commercial Center is located about 15 miles north of NIU on Route 23 and Pearson Drive. The center is planned to have 12 lots and include a National Bank and Trust Company.
Other businesses negotiating the purchase of lot space are Brown’s County Market and Prairie Storage Units.
Mark Suchy, president and CEO of Briody Enterprises, said the internal structure of the shopping center has been completed, but it needs tenants.
Briody Enterprises has built residential subdivisions, custom homes and commercial projects in Genoa for the past 20 years.
“Building plans are currently being brought to the city of Genoa for Brown’s County Market so that groundbreaking can begin,” Suchy said.
The smaller of the two developmental projects is located on the south side of Route 72, east of Route 23.
Joe Misurelle, Genoa economic development coordinator, said the currently vacant property will be annexed and zoned into the city of Genoa in upcoming months. The property has a possibility of four developmental lots.
“It can take months depending on the annex agreement with the city and for state legal requirements to be resolved,” Misurelle said.
The city is responsible for the legal end and making sure the private contractors are within the municipal codes.
The property first has to be annexed by the city and then has to label a zoning classification. The city makes sure the private contractors are meeting municipal codes and serves as a medium between contractors and commercial vendors.
