A female perspective
February 17, 2004
From heartbreak to orgasm, the everyday experiences of women will be demonstrated during “The Vagina Monologues.”
The performance will run at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Gabel Hall’s Caven Auditorium.
The production is being put on by the NIU Women’s Law Caucus, which is the first law school in the country to gain permission to perform the show, said Heather Wier, president of the Women’s Law Caucus.
“You laugh, you cry, you leave inspired,” Wier said.
Permission to put on the show was issued by V-Day and the College Campaign, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls, Wier said.
The monologues will be performed by a cast of about 25 women.
“We are hoping for three productions for three sold-out crowds,” Wier said.
Last year, the show sold out two of its three productions and raised more than $6,000.
“We’re hoping to top that this year,” Wier said.
One hundred percent of the proceeds are given to three organizations. Ten percent will go to the Missing and Murdered Women in Juarez, Mexico; the other 90 percent will be split between CASA of DeKalb County, the HUGS chapter of Rockford and the Elgin Community Crisis Center, Wier said.
The cost is $8 for students and $12 for the general public.
Wier said that there are misconceptions about the event. A lot of people think it’s about men-bashing and extreme feminism, but it’s not, she said.
“It’s really important for both men and women to attend,” Wier said. “For women, it’s about the experiences that affect them. For men, it’s about issues that affect their sisters, potential daughters and female friends.”
