School of Art sponsors Greece trip
February 4, 2004
NIU’S School of Art is offering a travel program to Greece, held May 14 to 26.
Professor Dimitri Liakos will direct the trip, lecturing and acting as a guide throughout the program.
The program is open to all students and community members.
Liakos has 38 years of teaching experience. He has planned and directed more than 100 travel programs to 41 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, he said.
The travel program includes first-class hotels with two meals a day and a deluxe motor coach. The entire program costs $2,280, which doesn’t include airfare.
“The price is just incredible this year,” Liakos said. “Next year you wouldn’t be able to do it for less than $3,300.”
Liakos was born in Athens, Greece. He can provide a great amount of knowledge to those attending the program, he said.
“What we offer is knowledge; what we offer is experience; what we offer is art, and art is something you have to see,” Liakos said.
Liakos said the program had to be canceled last year because of the war in Iraq. Greece was chosen for this year’s program because it is a safe location, he said.
The program will include visits to historical cities including Athens,Olympia and Delphi. People attending can look forward to seeing where the Olympic Games first were held in 776 B.C. The Olympic Games will be returning to Greece in August, this time in Athens.
“When I was a child, I could see the Parthenon from my bedroom window,” Liakos said.
