E.B.O.N.Y to hold spring membership informational
February 18, 2004
E.B.O.N.Y. Women will hold its spring 2004 membership informational at 7 p.m. today at the Stevenson C/D classroom.
The event will inform students about how to become a member of the organization.
Shaunta Butler, vice president of E.B.O.N.Y. Women, said the purpose of the organization is to uplift the NIU public by promoting community service. Butler also said the organization focuses on women issues.
“We work to uplift, unite and enlighten women on campus,” she said.
The informational will give E.B.O.N.Y. Women members a chance to meet those who are interested, Butler said.
The name E.B.O.N.Y. Women means Elite, Bold, Opulent, Noble, Young Women. Butler said those are the type of members they are seeking.
E.B.O.N.Y. Women also will host a discussion called “Who YOU Calling a … U-N-I-T-Y.” The event is a discussion about various words and expressions used by and toward African-Americans. Butler said there are many expressions African-Americans use for each other which degrade rather than uplift. Butler said the program came about because one of the members noticed the terminology being used by students at NIU.
E.B.O.N.Y. Women also will hold a clothing drive. There will be boxes set up in each residence hall for students to donate their unwanted clothing. The clothing will go to a charitable organization.
